Why Money Isn’t Everything

HBA Business Networking Blog!

There are some people you may want to listen to, when it comes to your small business and your Money…

With a Net Worth of $4.2 Billion, Richard Branson may be one. I found this article  at Entrepreneur.

Richard Branson freely gives his business experience and advice. I found this article to be interesting, focusing on why money isn’t everything and the other assets you have.

To quote Richard… “Entrepreneurship is a great leveler, since having the benefit of a wealthy background or a generous investor isn’t always an advantage. The wonderful thing is that money is not the sole currency when it comes to starting a business; drive, determination, passion and hard work are all free and more valuable than a pot of cash.”

Its and quick read, check it out and see if it may enlighten you and your view of small business.

Editor’s Note: Entrepreneur Richard Branson regularly shares his business experience and advice with readers. Ask him a question and your query might be the inspiration for a future column.

Q: Does starting a business always require a big pot of money?
No. While you will need a few core ingredients to launch a business and then make a success of it, a big pot of money is not one of them. In fact, having substantial financial backing can actually slow or stop you from identifying your business’s problem areas and coming up with ways to fix them. In many cases, it can be better to start with very little money, since the skills you’ll develop as you overcome the challenges of growing your business will be invaluable — you’ll notice your mistakes earlier and adjust more quickly, which will make for a healthier company.

Let’s face it: Your first few attempts to start a business are not likely to go according to plan. I have launched my share of businesses that didn’t get off the ground, and looking back, these were useful experiences.

Related: Richard Branson on Entrepreneurial Determination

When I was a schoolboy I tried to launch a number of different schemes — for example, when my friend Nik Powell and I tried to grow and sell Christmas trees, but we lost our crop to hungry rabbits. It was disheartening at the time, but had we more capital to begin with, we would probably have made the same mistakes on a bigger scale, and we’d have lost more money.

So money can only get you so far. If you’re a beginning entrepreneur launching your first startup, a big pot of money may only mask problems that will eventually catch up with you.

From my first experience of failure I began to understand just how much I didn’t know about starting a business, and that even ideas that I thought couldn’t fail, wouldn’t necessarily work out.

And gradually, by making mistakes over time and learning from them, I hit on what became my key guiding principles: That you must only launch businesses that will improve people’s lives and that you are passionate about. You must try to create something different that will stand out. When things go wrong (as they often do), don’t give up — be tenacious. Try to be visible — it’s important to get out there and sell your product. Many great ideas fail just because their potential customers don’t hear about them.

A perfect example of how far you can go without financial backing can be seen in the Tenner competition held by the business and enterprise education charity Young Enterprise, in which young school kids in Britain are given 10 pounds and challenged to use it to do something enterprising within a month. Children have used the money for everything from helping musicians and artists to promote their work to setting up a course on feeding and grooming horses. It is amazing to see how much some are able to do with their tenner.

With the creativity and spirit of those kids in mind, I am thankful that my team and I are in a position to help other entrepreneurs find funding these days. Through a public-private partnership including Virgin Money, Virgin Unite and Project North East, we are helping to manage a government program in the North East of England and in Cumbria that makes small loans available to emerging businesses — up to 25,000 pounds at reasonable rates of interest. The program is only a few months old but we have already seen some wonderful people and ideas, in businesses ranging from pet shops and hardware stores to digital animation studios and dance schools.

The StartUp Loans program doesn’t just provide sensible levels of funding, but also mentorship and advice for those who are given loans — invaluable insights from people who have been there and done it. In business, the best way of learning is through doing, so I always encourage young people to start a business over going to business school — it’s cheaper and you’ll learn a lot more about what it takes to run a successful company.

Entrepreneurship is a great leveler, since having the benefit of a wealthy background or a generous investor isn’t always an advantage. The wonderful thing is that money is not the sole currency when it comes to starting a business; drive, determination, passion and hard work are all free and more valuable than a pot of cash.

Tips: Business Networking on LinkedIn

Small Business-to-Business Networking News

Below is a great article I found on Business Insider. The tips they provide in 8 easy ways is right on the money. LinkedIn and any Social Media Platform works if used properly and consistently. My tip is this. Whatever Social Media Platform you use in your online business networking efforts, just pick one or two to focus on. It is time consuming, don’t be fooled. 8 Easy Ways To Promote Your Business On LinkedIn

Charlie Minato | Jul. 25, 2012, 9:04 AM

LinkedIn isn’t just a place for personal promotion and career networking — businesses can do a lot on the professional network. In Dan Sherman’s Maximum Success With LinkedIn, that point is stressed heavily.LinkedIn looks a lot like Facebook, but with a targeted audience that companies can take advantage of. The best part: many of the solutions for increasing the presence of your business on LinkedIn are free and easy to use.

And many of them you are probably already doing in other social media, just not on LinkedIn.

1. Get your company on LinkedIn.

1. Get your company on LinkedIn.

Jim Edwards / BI

It sounds obvious, but many businesses have yet to sign up for an account. Sherman recommends filling out all of the tabs offered. This includes a proper logo, a link to a Twitter feed, a brief overview of company milestones, and more.

2. Show off what you do.

LinkedIn allows companies to display up to three products or services in the form of 640 x 220 pixel images. This gives visitors an easy visual representation of what your company does. Everybody loves pictures.

3. Get recommendations from users.

3. Get recommendations from users.

Is being friendly cool? Canadians think so.

By soundfromwayout on Flickr

When you set up your company’s page, LinkedIn will give you the option to get recommendations, by default. You should not only do this, but get as many as you can. Sherman recommends—much like anything on LinkedIn—that you rewrite and customize the default recommendation request message. This is likely to increase the response to your recommendation requests.

4. Give others an inside look at your company through visuals.

Sherman recommends buying a Flipcam for YouTube testimonials—but that might be not even be necessary. Short videos can be recorded and easily uploaded with most smartphones, allowing for you to quickly give glimpses into your company. Everyone loves office tours.

5. Use status updates like Facebook.

5. Use status updates like Facebook.

Screenshot

LinkedIn’s status updates allow others to like and comment on status updates on company pages — much like Facebook. Sherman says LinkedIn’s own data suggest half of its users are following companies, so there’s plenty of room for more connections and fans between your company and LinkedIn users.Sherman uses HubSpot as a prime example of how you can turn LinkedIn status updates into traffic and ultimately sales.

6. Connect with companies you are interested in.

6. Connect with companies you are interested in.

Follow companies, interact with the employees, and most importantly, learn. LinkedIn allows you to see part of another company without ever getting up from your desk. Whether it’s B2B sales or a new job vacancy, study the company you are trying to interact with on LinkedIn. Furthermore, interact with its employees, who you can also see on LinkedIn.

7. Use LinkedIn Events to promote your offline meetings, launch parties and conferences.

Create an event page, fill out all the information you can, and invite others to attend. Remember, when someone accepts an invitation to attend, it will show up on their LinkedIn profile, extending the reach of the event.

8. Remember to use LinkedIn’s features before the event.

Introduce yourself to others before the event. Sherman recommends sending a personal message to those you’ve not connected with before. In addition, take time to learn who will be at the event—this way you can maximize your time better. If you are feeling really ambitious, invite them into your network before the event; if not—add them after the event.

Sherman recommends interacting with bloggers…

Microsoft -Yammer Business Networking

Small Business-to-Business Networking News

Microsoft -Yammer takes Business Networking to the next level

Here at Hometown Business Alliance we want to always bring you the latest news. I believe you will appreciate this article I found In the Washington Post. It concerns business networking and small business as not only an social media business networking platform but also will provide, from what I understand, Microsoft tools and application as an online solution for small business. I think it is brilliant and will serve small business-to-business networking in a way that will bring more unity and connection between businesses all around the globe.

As you know this is the similar mission of Hometown Business Alliance and for small business networking we see this as a platform that many in our alliance can and will utilize as one of their internet marketing and promotional strategies.

Microsoft to pay $1.2 billion for Yammer’s Facebook-like networking service for business

Damian Dovarganes, File/Associated Press – FILE- In this Monday, June 18, 2012, file photo, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveils its”Surface”, a new tablet computer to compete with Apple’s iPad at Hollywood’s Milk Studios in Los Angeles. Microsoft announced Monday, June 25, 2012, that is paying $1.2 billion to buy Yammer, an Internet startup that has built a social network similar to Facebook for the business world.

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, June 25, 5:43 PM

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft is buying Internet startup Yammer for $1.2 billion in an attempt to bring Facebook-like sharing features to its widely used suite of business software applications.Yammer specializes in creating private social networks so employees within the same company can keep tabs on what colleagues are working on. That’s similar to how Facebook’s online social network allows friends and families to track what’s happening in each other’s personal lives.

Facebook quietly rolls out ‘Find Friends Nearby’ feature

VentureBeat.com 12:22 PM ET

The new feature to its mobile and web apps may let you speed up the process of “friending” someone you’re already hanging out with.

The deal, announced Monday, comes nearly two weeks after word of Microsoft’s negotiations with Yammer first leaked out in published reports. The acquisition represents Microsoft’s latest attempt to adapt to a major shift in the technology industry, one that is fueling demand for more Internet-connected services and social-networking tools. The upheaval is threatening to marginalize Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, and ultimately diminish the amount of money coming in from sales of its Windows operating system and a wide range of applications designed primarily for personal computers. As part of its effort to remain relevant, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion last year for Internet video chat service Skype in the largest acquisition in its history. In another bold move, Microsoft last week unveiled its own tablet computer, Surface, to compete with Apple Inc.’s iPad. Microsoft has designed Surface to run on the upcoming Windows 8, the biggest change to the company’s operating system in nearly two decades.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is counting on Yammer’s sharing tools to ensure that long-established Microsoft applications, including its word processing and spreadsheet programs, remain vital components for getting work done. Google Inc. has emerged as a threat with a toolbox of similar programs that run primarily over the Internet rather than on individual machines.

“Think of Yammer as a fundamental part of our Office family,” Ballmer said on a Monday conference call.

Microsoft will have much of the same autonomy given to Skype since that deal closed eight months ago. Yammer will continue to be run from its San Francisco headquarters by its co-founder and CEO, David Sacks. It will also continue to provide its services separately from Microsoft’s offerings.

Microsoft did not give a time frame for when the deal should close.

Gartner Inc. analyst Larry Cannell said Microsoft’s latest acquisition was smart and reflected “a recognition that the social capabilities in Microsoft’s products have been deficient.”

Investors couldn’t muster much enthusiasm for the deal on another somber day for the stock market. Microsoft’s stock fell 82 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $29.88.

Although other companies such as Jive Software Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. are building social networks for businesses, Yammer shares the most DNA with Facebook Inc.

When it started in 2008, Yammer raised its initial funding from Peter Thiel — Facebook’s first major investor. Thiel formerly worked with Sacks while they were both executives at PayPal, an online payment service that eBay Inc. bought for $1.5 billion in 2002.

Beijing’s new leaders will face pressure from a growing grass-roots army of online activists.

Yammer has relied largely on word of mouth to attract more than 5 million registered users at more than 200,000 companies worldwide. The service depends on employees to use its free tools to set up a private network within their company. Once the network is getting wide usage, Yammer then tries to sell more sophisticated features to the companies. As a privately held company, Yammer hasn’t disclosed its revenue. In a Monday note about the Microsoft deal, Nomura Securites analyst Rick Sherlund estimated Yammer’s revenue at $15 million to $20 million last year. The company has been expanding so rapidly that it had been considered a prime candidate to pursue an IPO by next year. The stock of Yammer rival Jive Software has gained 65 percent since it went public six months ago, though it fell 74 cents Monday to close at $19.75.

The IPO market has gone into a deep freeze since Facebook flopped in its closely watching stock market debut last month. Instead of soaring as had been widely anticipated, Facebook shares plummeted during the first few weeks of trading. Although the stock has rallied recently, it remains 16 percent below the IPO price of $38, which had minted Facebook Inc. with a market value of $104 billion. Facebook shares dropped 99 cents, or 3 percent, Monday to close at $32.06.

Sacks said the frosty conditions in the IPO market didn’t influence Yammer’s decision to sell to Microsoft. The negotiations between the two companies began before Facebook’s IPO, according to Saks and Ballmer.

“Our thinking was based on the fit with Microsoft and the fact that we think Microsoft is a great partner for us in expanding the service and taking it to the next level,” Sacks said.

The sale will provide a hefty return for Yammer’s early backers. The startup has raised about $142 million in venture capital.

What makes business-to-business networking worth your while?

By Leanne Hoagland-Smith March 5, 2012 8:50AM

Leanne Hoagland-Smith. | Provided photo~Sun-Times Media

Business-to-business networking is how many small business owners and crazy busy sales professionals increase sales. Any day of the work week, there are Chamber luncheons, open houses, formal business to business networking groups, association meetings not to mention the seminars, workshops to webinars. Sorting through these events, attending them, all take time and for some professionals, this is time not well invested.

In December 2005, I wrote an article about the cost of business to business networking. What I calculated was that the average small business owner or sales professional invested about $30,000 a year specific to business to business networking. Here is the basis for that calculation:

• Membership in one Chamber of Commerce, one formal business to business networking group, one industry association and one professional association

• Food costs (breakfast, lunch, dinners)

• Travel costs (fuel costs at that time were around $2.35 gallon)

• Time costs (attending, driving and planning)

Today I am sure that $30,000 investment has increased by at least 20 percent due to fuel costs alone. And this investment does not include any other marketing activities such as tradeshows; writing blogs, articles or columns; updating websites; printing business cards or brochures; giving away promotional items; or to interacting on other social media sites.

Now if the small business owner or sales professional has clients with an average annual value of $1,000, he or she would need to secure 30 new clients minimum every year to just break even with those invested business to business networking dollars.

Unfortunately, as in many marketing expenditures, there is no time devoted to analyzing the results from business to business networking. The attitude or mindset of “if sales are up,” then the marketing efforts are working restricts further analysis.

Proper analysis builds the foundation for predictive analysis. From this data, business resources of time, energy, money and emotions can be better directed to those business to business networking events that generate the greatest return on investment. Without this analysis, business owners and sales people are engaged in the role of Captain Wing It where they spray their marketing actions all over the place and the pray something will stick.

To increase sales begins with attracting attention and building relationships. Business to business networking events are a great springboard for marketing success. With the ever increasing out of pocket costs to the decreasing of available time, asking yourself what makes business to business networking worth my while is one very necessary question to be answered honestly and with the verifiable data. This is not the time to “guess” or “presume.”

My sense is the majority of small business owners, sales professionals and probably C Suite executives have never invested the time to answer this question. I also believe the $30,000 figure noted earlier probably was received with some shock and disbelief. My recent calculations suggest a figure closer to $38,000.

If you wish to increase sales, to improve profitability and to reduce some of those stresses associated with business operations, it just may make sense to analyze these marketing results. Maybe all this business to business networking has you just surviving and not thriving where as one colleague has shared “you are confusing motion with progress and activity with results.”

P.S. Shout Out: The Elk Lodges in Hobart and Valparaiso provide halls for rental and support local community efforts including offering college scholarships.
